Hans [looking to the window]. But, Mother, it is all dark—there is no light in the window for Him! Mother, we've got a little piece of a candle. Mayn't I put it in the cup that's broken and light it?
Mother. Yes, my little son.
[Hans jumps on the box and reaches a bit of
candle from the mantel. Fastens it in the
cup and lights it. Gretel watching
anxiously. Then together they put it in the
window and sing "The Christ-Candle."
