“Dear David Lindsay,” she said, with a final sob and sigh, “go, if you feel that you must go, and put me on this probation, if you think I need it! But I shall soon write and beg you to come back to me. Be sure of that! And you will come just as soon as I send for you, will you not?”

“Just as soon as you write for me,” he answered.

“And oh, David Lindsay, if I thought you wouldn’t—if I thought that anything could happen to prevent you from coming back to me—I could never bear to see you go. It would break my heart. You will come back to me? Tell me again.”

“I will come back as soon as you send for me.”
