No. 5 Afghan “ACCENT ON DAISIES”
MATERIALS—Jack Frost Knitting Worsted (4-fold Germantown) in 4-oz. sks:—5-sks. Navy, 3-sks. Harding Blue, 8-sks. Silver Gray and 3-sks. Variegated Java. Crochet hook size 0. CRAZY DAISY WINDER.
Size—47″ x 67″.
BLOCK—Daisy—Following instructions on page [2], Illustration C, wind Variegated Java twice around each spoke of Winder, cut about 14″ long and weave center as in Ill. E, making a 12-petal flower with 2 loops in each petal. Three dark petals will alternate with 3 light petals around Daisy.
Base—In Gray, ch 6, sl st in 1st st. Ch 4, hdc in ring, (ch 2, hdc in ring) 6 times, ch 2, sl st in 2d st of 1st 4-ch. ROW 2—Ch 3, turn, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next 2-ch sp, * ch 1, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next sp, ch 1, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next sp. Repeat from * twice. Ch 1, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next sp, ch 1, sl st in 1st 3-ch. ROW 3—Sl st in next dc, * (sc, ch 3, sc) in corner 2-ch, ch 1 and with a Daisy held on top of work, sc thru back lp of 1st of 3 dark petals into next 1-ch sp, (ch 1, sc thru back lp of next dark petal into next 1-ch sp) twice, ch 1 and repeat from * around, joining 3 light petals next, then 3 dark petals and finally, 3 light petals. End with ch 1, sl st in 1st sc at corner. ROW 4—* (Sc, ch 3, sc) in corner sp, (ch 1, sc in next 1-ch sp) 4 times, ch 1 and repeat from * around. End with ch 1, sl st in 1st sc at corner. Cut 3″ long. ROW 5—Turn, (sc, ch 3, sc) in Harding Blue in one corner, * (ch 1, sc in next sp) 5 times, ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in corner sp. Repeat from * around, working over end left from last row. End with ch 1, sl st in 1st sc at corner. Cut 3″ long. ROW 6—Repeat Row 5 in Navy with 1 more ch 1 and sc on each side. Cut 6″ long, thread to a needle and fasten off on back.

2d BLOCK—Repeat as far as 3d corner in Row 6. In place of corner 3-ch, make 1 ch, sl st in 2d st of a corner 3-ch on 1st Block, being careful to have the dark petals of one Daisy opposite to those in other. Ch 1, sc back in corner sp of 2d Block, (ch 1, sl st across in next sp on 1st Block, ch 1, sc back in next sp on 2d Block) repeated across to corner, ch 1, sl st in 2d st of corner 3-ch on 1st Block, ch 1, sc back in same corner sp on 2d Block, then complete row and fasten off. Continue to make and join Blocks,—14 wide by 21 long,—alternating direction of dark petals in Daisies.
BORDER—In Navy, (sc, ch 3, sc) in one corner, (ch 1, sc in next 1-ch sp) repeated around, with corners like 1st one. End with ch 1, sl st in 1st sc. ROW 2—Sc in corner 3-ch, ch 3, 3 dc and 1 sc in same sp, * ch 3, 3 dc in next sc, sc in next 2d sc, ch 3, 3 dc in next 1-ch sp, sc in next 2d 1-ch sp. Repeat from * around, with (sc, ch 3, 3 dc and 1 sc) all in corner 3-ch sp. End with sl st in 1st sc and fasten off. ROW 3—Turn, (sc, ch 3, 3 dc and sc) in Variegated Java in 3-ch of a corner shell, (ch 3, 3 dc in same place, sc in 3-ch of next shell) repeated around with each corner like 1st one. Join and fasten off. Repeat Row 3 in Navy, Harding Blue and Navy.
Stretch and pin afghan right-side-down on a large, padded table or board, or on quilting or curtain frames. Steam and press dry thru a cloth (see Blocking Instructions on page [31]).
