Scarce one such day, methinks, appears
In the long record of the years
Of England’s worthier son.
If on this tablet’s surface light
His hourly toils should Shaftesbury write
All may be soon effaced:
But in our grateful memories graven
And in the registers of Heaven
They will not be erased.
