Max did not see it.
It did not require a great exercise of his reasoning powers, or even much knowledge of the rules of logic, to comprehend the result.
He fell through the open door.

AN UNEXPECTED BATH.
Throwing out his hands to save himself, Max clutched the door and closed it, by accident, after him.
It had a spring lock, and he was a prisoner.
Fortunately, the fall did not hurt him.
He was only shaken and slightly bruised.
His pursuers reached the door and tried it.
