England; chief reporter on the Manchester Guardian several years; went to Dunedin, New Zealand; on staff of Otago Daily Times 1862; confidential clerk and secretary to treasury New Zealand 1870 to death; wrote articles in New Zealand Times on denudation of the forests which attracted much attention. d.
