KIRBY, Thomas. b. Osbaldwick near York, Aug. 1770; went to Russia with a cargo of horses 1791; in the service of count Poltrowsky, in charge of 100 mares; with Primrose won a £50 plate at Chesterfield 29 Aug. 1804; a breeder of horses from 1804; in 1821 eight horses carrying his colours chocolate and white cap were racing; sold General Chasse to Nicholas emperor of Russia for 2250 guineas and Van Tromp for 2000 guineas; consulted by the government about shipping the horses to the Crimea in 1854. d.
