NIGHTINGALE, William. b. 1799; acted as a judge of coursing in England and Scotland during many years; judged the first Waterloo cup 1857; retired 1860, when he was presented with a testimonial; a very powerful man, could lift any weight, and hold any team of horses together on the box seat; could jump the Big Cut from the Engine at Aintree; a farmer at Skibeden, near Skipton and a good judge of bullocks and sheep. d. 2 Sept. 1869, at his request a representation of a greyhound was placed on his coffin and buried with him in Gisburn ch. yard.
