  1. Some arcane spellings retained where verified as correct for the time of publication or quote, such as 'musquitoes', 'plaintain', 'mettals', 'felspar', etc.
  2. Italian quotations sometimes include phrases such as "sull' Etna" or "dell' Asia". There should be no space after the apostrophes but spaces are often present. This may have been done to better space the text during justification. Such errors have not been corrected.
  3. The document is inconsistent in the use of commas where quoting numbers of over 1,000; sometimes they are used and sometimes they are not used. These inconsistencies remain.
  4. Addition of full-stops where omitted within text outlining chapter highlights; page ix after 'Silvestri', page x after 'Eruptions' and '1408', page xi after 'microscope', page 79 after '812'.
