[3] Mr. Braidwood was at the head of the London Fire Brigade; and, after a hardworking and useful life, was killed at the post of duty during the great Tooley Street Fire in 1861, by the sudden collapse of a wall. This fire burnt for a fortnight, and caused the loss of property valued at 2,000,000l. sterling.
