Violanta, without giving Don Cornelio time to reply, raised the curtain that closed the entrance of the jacal.

"Come in, my father," she said.

The missionary appeared. Doña Angela greeted him respectfully, and pointed to a chair.

"You wish to speak with me, my father?" she said.

"Yes, madam," he replied with a bow.

"I am ready to listen to you."
