Great Paul is the masterpiece of Messrs. Taylor, “one of Loughborough’s glories,” says Dr. Raven. It hangs in the same tower, below Phelps’ bell, and weighs 16 tons 14 cwt., the diameter at the mouth being 9½ feet. It was cast in 1881, and simply bears the founders’ trade-mark and the words (said to have been selected by Canon Liddon) from 1 Corinthians ix. 16:
VAE MIHI SI NON EVANGELISAVERO
“Woe unto me if I preach not the Gospel.”
It is used for a few minutes before Sunday services, and at certain other times.
