The Sunnis represent the orthodox church of Islam, recognise no divine right of succession to the Caliphate, and claim for the “faithful” free choice in the selection of their spiritual leader; the Shiahs, or sectarians, claim that the right of succession to Muhammad rests with his cousin Ali and Ali’s descendants.
