PORTRAIT OF THE SECOND KING OF CAMBODIA
(NOW THE FIRST KING).

INTERVIEW WITH THE SECOND KING.

“Sire,” said I, “I had the honour of an interview with the first King at Komput, and of being favoured by him with permission to visit Udong.”

“Are you French or English?” he asked, examining me attentively.

“I am a Frenchman, Sire.”

“You are not a merchant; why do you come to Cambodia?”

“Sire, I came through Siam to see your country, and to hunt here, if allowed.”

“Very good. You have been in Siam? I also have visited Bangkok. Come and see me again.”
