TO-DAY our gas and water supplies were cut off! The town-crier announces that people are forbidden to circulate on the high roads between 6 P.M. and 6 A.M., and that foreigners in the commune are not to leave it under penalty of immediate arrest.

A home guard has been organized, which is to be armed and patrol the streets at night.

20 August, 1914.

THE efforts to find the automobile signalled on the 6th were perhaps not without success. We were told to-day that an automobile with nuns in it had been seized. A child happened to call attention to the size of the nuns' hands, and it was discovered that they were no other than two German officers. Their automobile contained a large quantity of powder.

These Germans were shot at Lagny almost immediately, I am told, but of this I am not positive, as I know it only by hearsay.
