The proud Pacific chafes her strand,

She hears the dark Atlantic roar;

And, nurtured on her ample breast,

How many a goodly prospect lies

In Nature’s wildest grandeur drest,

Enamelled with her loveliest dyes.

Rich prairies, decked with flowers of gold,
