“What do you mean?”

The Abyssinian clapped his hands. Ashah appeared. Ajeeb pointed at Cook, and then made a peculiar sign. Enoch’s heart stood still. Was he to be butchered?

“Come.”

Ashah beckoned to him. Cook did not move.

“You won’t obey, eh?”

Ashah caught the man up in his arms and carried him from the room. Enoch was placed in the cellar apartment with Stolburst.

The latter slept, and Deth stood on guard. Ashah tossed Cook into the chamber, and then withdrew. The other prisoner awoke, with a start. When his glance rested upon Enoch, he rubbed his eyes like one in a dream.

“Is it you, Sam Henry?”

“My name is Enoch Cook.”

“True; the detective declared that was your name,” said Stolburst.
