considered the greatest. 25 And he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and those who exercise authority over them are called benefactors. 26 But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the youngest, and he who leads as one who serves. 27 For who is greater, one who sits at the table, or one who serves? Is it not the one who sits at the table? But I am among you as One who serves. 28 You are those who have continued with me in my trials. 29 And I bestow on you a kingdom, just as my Father bestowed one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31 "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has asked to have you, that he might sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and when you have turned again, strengthen your brethren." 33 But he said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death." 34 He said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day before you deny three times that you know me."
35 And he said to them, "When I sent you out with no purse or bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" They said, "Nothing." 36 He said to them, "But now, let him who has a purse take it, and likewise a bag; and let him who has no sword sell his robe and buy one. 37 For I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in me, 'And he was numbered with transgressors'; for what is written about me has its fulfillment." 38 They said, "Look, Lord, here are two swords." And he said to them, "It is enough."
95.50 Jesus Washes the Feet of His Disciples
JN 13:1b-20
1 When Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 And during supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, 4 rose from supper, laid aside his garments, took a towel and girded himself. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded. 6 Then he came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" 7 Jesus answered him, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand." 8 Peter said to him, "You shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with me." 9 Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!" 10 Jesus said to him, "He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not every one of you." 11 For he knew who was to betray him;
that was why he said, "You are not all clean."
12 When he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, and
returned to his place, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. 18 I am not speaking of you all. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, 'he who ate my bread has lifted up his heel against me.' 19 Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does take place, you may believe that I am he. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives anyone I send receives me; and he who receives me receives him who sent me."
