Discovered by Davis, 1592; Hawkins off, 1594; the present name was given first to the sound by John Strong, captain, in 1690; in 1710 they were christened Malonines by French from St. Malo; finally, after various countries had established settlements in, it passed, 1833, into English possession, and is one of the crown colonies; Darwin on (see 'Voyage of the Beagle').
