Transcriber’s Note

As noted in the Editor’s introduction to Volume I, the spelling of names and places is variable, as the system of transliteration underwent many changes in the intervening century. The use of macrons was not yet introduced in James Tod’s day. The bold-faced section titles were apparently added by the editor, who did employ the macron. This text, with very few exceptions, follows the text as printed.

Hyphenation of compound words follows the text, with the rare exception of when it occurs on a line break and the preponderance of other instances provides clear guidance.

In the Index, on occasion, the reader is referred to a related topic, which does not appear in the Index. These remain unlinked.

Footnoted references on p. [1369] et seq to sections 6 and 8 of the Treaty given in Appendix V would seem to be incorrect. The provisions in Appendix IV conform with the discussion. Appendix V. had not been included in this printing, deemed to be too large.

Errors deemed most likely to be the printer’s have been corrected, and are noted here.
