“Však uvidíme!” pomyslila si stará královna. Ale neříkala nic. Šla do ložnice, sňala s postele všechny peřiny, položila je vedle na židli, pak položila na dno hrášek, na ten dala dvacet slamníků a ještě dvacet prachových peřin.
Na to přivedla princeznu k posteli, aby šla spát. Ráno, když přišla k snídani, tu se jí ptali, jak se jí to spalo.
“Ale špatně,” řekla princezna. “Celou noc jsem ani oka nezamhouřila! Co to jen v té posteli bylo? Ležela jsem na něčem tvrdém, takže mám záda samé modřiny. To je hrůza!”
Teď všichni viděli, že je to skutečná princezna protože skrze dvacet slamníků a dvacet prachových peřin ucítila hrášek. Tak citlivý nemůže býti nikdo než opravdická princezna.
Ten princ si ji tedy vzal za ženu, protože teď už věděl, že má skutečnou princeznu.
