[23] Spofford was a brother of A.R. Spofford, Librarian of Congress. He was a native of New Hampshire, who removed to Louisiana and held high judicial office there before the Civil War. After 1870 he spent much of his time in Pulaski. In 1877 he was elected to the United States Senate from Louisiana, but the Senate seated W.P. Kellogg, a carpetbagger from Illinois, who had been voted for by the "Packard Legislature."—Editor.
