Out of the painted gloom of smouldering logs—

Distorted bulks that bristled, and were dogs

Snarling at this invasion of their lair.

Hugh charged upon them, growling like a bear,

And sent them whining.

Now again to view

The burgeoning of scarlet, gold and blue,

The immemorial miracle of fire!

From heaped-up twigs a tenuous smoky spire

Arose, and made an altar of the place.
