‘For he hadde power of confessioun,

As seyde himself, more than a curat.’

The confessor would claim the right of burial, if it were worth having: cp. Vox Clam. iv. 735 ff.,

‘Mortua namque sibi, quibus hic confessor adhesit,

Corpora, si fuerint digna, sepulta petit;

Sed si corpus inops fuerit, nil vendicat ipse,’ &c.

21477. For baptism there would be no fee: so Vox Clam. iv. 739 f.,

‘Baptizare fidem nolunt, quia res sine lucro

Non erit in manibus culta vel acta suis.’

21481. Matt. vi. 25.
