“Who are you?” the captain asked.
Sard told him.
“So. You speak Spanish. What are you doing on the line?”
Sard told him.
“A likely story, eh, lieutenant?”
“Very likely, my captain.”
“You know the law against trespass on the line?”
“No, captain,” Sard said.
“That is false,” the captain answered; “since you know Spanish, you must know it.”
“I am English, and do not,” Sard said.
