Regimental Badges.—"The Crest and Motto (Treu und Fest) of the late Prince Consort"; also "The Sphinx" for Egypt (1801).

Nicknames.—"The Cherry-pickers" (from Peninsula times, a detachment having been taken prisoners in a fruit-garden during the campaign). "The Cherubims" (from the crimson overalls).

Notes.—Raised in Essex and adjoining counties. It is stated the regiment was first mounted on grey horses, and bore the motto, "Motus Componere." Its present title was bestowed because it escorted the Prince Consort on the occasion of his marriage to Her Majesty.
