Nicknames.—"The Sand Bags," "The Coal-heavers," "Old Eyes," "The House-maids' Pets," "The Bermuda Exiles."

Notes.—First raised in London by Colonel John Russell, and incorporated with the Royal Guards of Charles II., raised by Lord Wentworth in the Low Countries in 1656. The title received in 1815 was in recognition of having defeated the French Imperial Guards at Waterloo.
