Nicknames.—"The Dirty Shirts" (the 101st fought without the tunic at Delhi in 1857).

Notes.—The two battalions received their titles in 1846 and 1850, for distinction in the Sutlej and Punjaub Campaigns respectively; the officers of the 104th being allowed to wear also a scarlet band in the forage cap for services in India.
