Nickname.—"The Sweeps" (from its facings).

Notes.—Formed in 1800 by detachments from various regiments. As King William IV. remarked, "What more can be said of you, Riflemen, than that wherever there has been fighting there you have been, and wherever you have been you have distinguished yourselves?"
