[Figure 47]b shows the whole house under one massive gable. It looks particularly strong in contrast to the movement and delicate grace of the roof in sketch [47]a.

In sketch [47]c the center block of the house pops up for two full stories, towering above the low porch and shed.

Sketch [47]d shows a gambrel house with a lean-to but without a big porch sweeping across its front. This sketch is introduced to show that either the lean-to or the big front porch alone may occur on a house.
