As is typical in this series, there are a number of instances where the use of the comma in the printed book seems to me inappropriate. However, I have adhered to the punctuation as printed (except for obvious printing errors, which are noted above).
For example:
The horses given to them by special favor of Sheridan in place of
their worn-out mounts, were splendid animals, and Sergeant Whitley
himself had prepared them for their first appearance before their
new masters.
The horsemen firing their own carbines and swinging aloft their
sabers, galloped forward in a mighty rush.
