Vols. II.-V. were written by J. S. Vater. This is a history of all known languages and dialects, with an account of all the books printed in or relating to them. The second and third parts of the third volume—1813-1816—contain the languages of America. "On this Babel of an earth which you and I inhabit, there are said to be about three thousand languages and jargons. Of nearly five hundred of these you will find a specimen in the Mithridates of Adelung."—De Quincy.

It is difficult to believe that Mr. Guild really knew what he was writing about when he penned this note. The work is not bibliographical in a proper sense, and in the matter of biography it is confined mainly to New England clergymen. It might be omitted from this list without loss.
