Transcriber’s Note
The Creole dialogue is an admixture of French and English. Generally speaking, these were not italicized, and so have not been marked as French. Where French words or phrases are italicized or enclosed in quotation marks in the narrative itself, the appropriate language markers have been added.
Errors deemed most likely to be the printer’s have been corrected, and are noted here. The references are to the page and line in the original. The following issues should be noted, along with the resolutions.
