Just then the breed gave a low moan, and, as Rex bent over him, he slowly opened his eyes.

“He’s coming round all right,” Rex said as he straightened up.

“Did wolf geet in?” Parry asked in a weak tone.

“Not exactly,” Rex replied. “But something else did,” and he glanced at the two boys who were standing close together a little to one side.

Parry followed his gaze and, as he saw the boys, he gave Rex a questioning look.

“They are two friends of mine,” Rex explained.

“Then dere was no wolf, non?”

“I’m afraid not,” Rex replied.

“But der head. I seed heem.”

“There it is on the table.”
