Low on the earth, dissolved in reverent fear,

They heard a voice, which none but they must hear;

The voice of God; no more in frowns express’d,

With lightnings written, or in thunder dress’d,

Such as at Sinai issued forth the Law,

And, with dread earthquakes, rock’d the plains below;

But all melodious, tranquil, and serene,

Which charm’d like music this delightful scene;
