The original, in eleven stanzas, was published in 1864 in Hymns for Saints’ Days, by a layman, Lord Nelson. One of the omitted stanzas reads:
For the Apostles’ glorious company
Who, bearing forth the Cross o’er land and sea,
Shook all the mighty world, we sing to Thee.
