The hymn is based on Deut. 32:3: “Because I will publish the name of the Lord: ascribe ye greatness unto our God.” The original poem of nine stanzas, Schütz’s only hymn, first appeared in his Christliches Gedenkbüchlein. Our hymn is a translation of stanzas 1, 3, 5, and 7 of the original.
