To Heaven the Christian negress sent her sighs,

In morning vows, and evening sacrifice;

She pray’d for blessings to descend on those

Who dealt to her the cup of many woes;

Thought of her home in Africa forlorn,

Yet, while she wept, rejoic’d that she was born: [[110]]

Ennobling virtue fix’d her hopes above,

Enlarg’d her heart, and sanctified her love.

With lowly steps the path of peace she trod,

A happy pilgrim, for she walk’d with God.
