Refreshing sleep—yet ’twas a sadd’ning sight,

To see them, in the pale and glimmering light,

Both look so deathlike; while she stoop’d to trace

Each vein so blue, beneath the skin so white,

She scarce refrain’d from kissing each dear face,

And waking both the sleepers with a fond embrace.

She left them to their peaceful rest awhile,

And, stepping softly, gain’d the open door;

The house was built in simple western style,
