What novels of Sir Walter Scott are to Britons, the romances of Dumas to the French, such are the stories of the Flag Series to Americans. Who among us does not revere our noble flag and the sainted memory of the men who fought and fell in its sacred folds? And these men were as ourselves; albeit cast upon days of more heroic mould. They had virtues, vices, foibles and traits that endear, even as we of to-day. They had wives and sweethearts who prayed for them in the battle hour, and who listened to their serenades in the brief-snatched intervals of wooing.
