“I’ve heard the schooner was haunted. It is said that years ago the captain, mate, and a sailor were murdered on this boat. I never could prove it true because her name was changed.”
“Do you know that her name was changed?”
“Yes, that’s true.”
“You know that?”
“I do.”
“Then the other story may be true.”
“I’ve owned her for three years.”
“And you’ve never had any luck in her?”
“Neither any one else who ever owned her. I thought I might make her pay when others had failed. I’ll give it up and sell her as quick as I can.”
“Say, captain,” said the mate in a husky voice, “mebbe this is the boat in which Hicks the pirate murdered the captain.”
