“I’ll sleep on the floor—you sleep in the berth.”
“All right.”
The mate got in the berth, but in less than a second he leaped forth with a yell, and the captain, who had stretched upon the floor, sprang to his feet.

“Captain, I heard it.”
“What did you hear?”
“A voice.”
“You heard a voice?”
