“And then?”

“I will return home.”

“Home?” She repeated the word in such a wistful, lingering tone. “You will go back to Kamakura?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“My dear old home!” she said. And then, “You do not know what memories your presence recalls to me.”

He could not take his eyes from her expressive face.

“I have not seen it since I was a child,” she said. “Why do you go so soon?”

“My honorable commission ends.”

“There may be others.”

“I have no other,” he replied simply.
