A judge ought to have two kinds of salts—the salt of wisdom, that he may not be insipid; and the salt of conscience, that he may not be a devil.

A judge cannot be a witness in his own cause.

Judex non potest injuriam sibi datam punire.

A judge cannot punish an injury done to himself.

A judge does not give more than the petitioner himself requires.

Judicandum est legibus, non exemplis.

We must judge by the law, and not by examples.
