Transcriber's Notes

Nineteenth century spellings and inconsistencies in spelling and hyphenation are retained. Apparent inconsistencies in transliterations from numerous minority languages are also retained.

Minor changes to punctuation or formatting have been made without comment. Where ditto was used in lists and tables, these have been replaced with explicit repeat of the word above.

The [Addenda and Corrigenda] section contains substantial material - tables and multiple paragraph notes. These have not been applied to the main text. Where changes have been made to the text, these are listed at [the end of the book].

The back tick (´) is used in Greek to represent the "keraia" which denotes numbers.
