“Good morning, Placide, not too badly!”
“You have brought the things!”
“Here they are.”
“What will you have to take?”
“Nothing, thank you!”
“Come, a glass of beer, a cup of coffee!”
“Nothing, thank you all the same!”
“But you will say ‘Good day’ to Madame!”
“Why yes, if Madame wishes it.”
This little formality, for both speakers had said just those words hundreds of times and knew them by heart, being over, Placide went to see if Madame were free to see Madeleine, and Madeleine sipped coffee as though she had not refused it, and gossiped with the girls.
