SIEGFRIED
In sorrow I listened,
Grieving looked up;
He sat there still and sang.
"Hei! Siegfried has slain
The deceitful dwarf!
I know for him now
A glorious bride.
She sleeps where rugged rocks soar;
Ringed is her chamber by fire.
Who battles the flames
Wakens the bride,
Brünnhilde wins as reward!"
HAGEN
The wood-bird's counsel
Didst thou follow?
SIEGFRIED
Straight without pause
I rose and I ran
[Gunther listens with increasing astonishment.
Till I came to the fire-ringed rock.
I passed through the flames,
And for prize I found,
[More and more ecstatic.
