Till ignorance opes eye, bat-blind before,

And for the first time knows Peace means the power

On maw of pancake, cheese-cake, barley-cake,

No stop nor stint to stuffing. While, in camp,

Who fights chews rancid tunny, onions raw,

Peace sits at cosy feast with lamp and fire,

Complaisant smooth-sleeked flute-girls giggling gay.

How thick and fast the snow falls, freezing War

Who shrugs, campaigns it, and may break a shin

Or twist an ankle! come, who hesitates
