The time seems to have arrived for a new edition of Gibbon’s great work—furnished with such notes and appendices as may bring it up to the standard of recent historical research. This volume is the first of an illustrated History of Egypt in six volumes, intended both for students and for general reading and reference, and will present a complete record of what is now known, both of dated monuments and of events, from the prehistoric age down to modern times. For the earlier periods every trace of the various kings will be noticed, and all historical questions will be fully discussed. The volumes will cover the following periods;—
