3295. Suffocation from noxious gases, &c. Remove to the fresh air: dash cold vinegar and water in the face, neck and breast; keep up the warmth of the body; if necessary, apply mustard-poultices to the soles of the feet, and try artificial respiration as in drowning.


3296. Lightning and Sun-stroke.—Treat the same as apoplexy; that is, use plenty of cold water.


3297. Hanging.—Loose the cord, or whatever suspended the person, and proceed as for drowning, taking the additional precaution to apply eight or ten leeches to the temples, or cold water.


LEECHES AND THEIR APPLICATION.

3298. The leech used for medical purposes is called the Hirudo medicinalis, to distinguish it from other varieties, such as the horse-leech and the Lisbon leech.


3299. It varies from two to four inches in length, and is of a blackish brown color, marked on the back with six yellow spots, and edged with a yellow line on each side.
